Don't Just Tell Sob Stories! Here's HOW to Tell Better Stories!

"𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘣 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴."

"𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦."

"𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘮?"

These are some of the common things my coaching clients tell me why they cannot and don't want to tell stories.

So they want to play safe and stick to writing logical posts, and give speeches that are mere information dumps.

Unpleasant truth: Such black-or-white thinking is limiting.

The world is dynamic, and things exist probably in the various 100s of shades of grey in between.

You don't have to flood people with a full on sob tale.

The stage is not your therapy room, and Social Media is not your sympathy channel.

You just haven't mastered how to craft a great story.

Here are 3 quick lessons:

1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝘆, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

Here's a quick example of 3 statements:

1. "My father was violent, and every day he will lash me with his leather belt."
2. "My father was violent and caused me to have social anxiety. I felt very ashamed of myself."
3. "Having suffered physical abuse as a child, I've grown up with low self-esteem."

Statement (1) contains too much information about a dark moment. (2) sounds like you're blaming your father. (3) is skilful storytelling, containing just enough information for people to empathise with you, and relate to you.


2️⃣ 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

A story that showcases weakness without strength casts you as a victim. A story that showcases only strength make you sound like a brag.

If you can show how you've developed your strengths from your weaknesses shows the audience the transformation you've taken.


3️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗢𝘄𝗻

What journey have you undertaken? What journey do you want the audience to take after listening to you story?

You need to paint relevant details about the journey you've taken, what sacrifices did you make? What dilemmas did you have to weigh out? How did you make your decisions?

An unclear journey confuses your audience.

A rousing journey is inspiring.
